The Best Essential Oils for Seasonal Allergy Relief

Spring is in full bloom (which I love!) but do you want to know what I hate?

Seasonal allergies.

All you want to do is smell the flowers and enjoy the nicer weather, but instead, itchy eyes, stuffy nose, fatigue… bleh!

Most people reach straight for the medicine cabinet when they feel seasonal allergies creeping in. I try to avoid toxins wherever humanly possible, so it’s no surprise that I have some non-toxic alternatives up my sleeve.

Thankfully, some powerful essential oils serve as a natural and safe way to treat the symptoms of allergies and boost our immune systems. The first thing I reach for when I start noticing symptoms? A combo of Lemon, Peppermint, and Lavender essential oil – the three musketeers of allergy relief.

Quick info on allergies in general: essentially they happen when the body confuses typically harmless substances (like pollen) for invaders (like viruses and bacteria) and thinks they’re attacking our cells.

To prevent the attack, the immune system goes into overdrive producing antibodies and releasing histamines trying to fight the “invaders” which results in allergy symptoms – trouble breathing, rash/hives, fatigue, runny nose, nausea, etc.

When all of this is happening in the body, it means that inflammation levels in the body significantly increase, which results in the allergy sufferer not feeling like their best self, to put it lightly!

When you combine Lemon, Lavender, and Peppermint, they form an extremely effective antihistamine and reduce overall inflammation levels. In addition to their antihistamine and anti-inflammatory properties, these three bring even more allergy-soothing properties to the table.

Lemon supports lymphatic system drainage and helps with overcoming respiratory conditions. It is also an expectorant (great for clearing phlegm), is cleansing (for the air, surfaces, and the body), and is both calming and uplifting, helping to relieve fatigue.

Lavender has a calming effect on the mind and body, is cleansing, soothes skin irritations (rashes, hives, etc.), and reduces swelling and headaches.

Peppermint promotes clear breathing, helps with digestive issues, soothes headaches, and cools down the body. It also has the power to discharge phlegm and reduce inflammation — a leading cause of allergic reactions.

For the applications/uses below – I can’t stress how important it is to only use pure therapeutic grade oils to ensure safety and effectiveness. dōTERRA’s are the very best, of course.

Uses

• Add 2 drops Lemon, 2 drops Lavender, and 2 drops Peppermint to a shot glass of water and gargle for a minute or two, then swallow.

• Fill a veggie capsule with 2 drops Lemon, 2 drops Lavender, and 2 drops Peppermint oil. Take 1 capsule 3x daily. Empty veggie caps are available in your dōTERRA back office – or try out the Triease Softgels, which combines Lemon, Lavender, and Peppermint in an easy and convenient way for you to take on the go.

• Combine 2 drops Lemon, 2 drops Lavender, and 2 drops Peppermint with Fractionated Coconut Oil and apply to the bottoms of feet 3x (or more) per day. Also apply to skin irritations as needed.
